What Is a Security Bollard? Definition, Types, and Uses

Bollard Definition: What Is a Security Bollard?

A security bollard is a short, sturdy vertical post — typically made of 304 stainless steel or steel filled with concrete — that is installed to control or block vehicle access while allowing pedestrians to pass. The word "bollard" originally described the posts used to moor ships; today, security bollards are one of the most widely deployed physical barriers in the world, protecting storefronts, government buildings, airports, schools, and public plazas from accidental or deliberate vehicle impact. Security bollards come in two broad families: fixed bollards that are permanently anchored, and retractable bollards that rise and lower to let authorized vehicles through.

The Main Types of Security Bollards

Fixed bollards are the simplest and most affordable — a one-piece stainless steel column anchored to a concrete foundation, ideal for permanent protection zones. Removable bollards unlock and lift out when access is occasionally needed. Manual retractable bollards use a key-operated pneumatic spring to rise and lower without any power supply. Full automatic retractable bollards are driven by an electro-hydraulic system, integrate with license plate recognition and access control, and are the standard choice for high-traffic vehicle-controlled entrances. All PROCOLUM security bollards use 304 stainless steel columns, IP68 waterproofing, and 3M Diamond Grade reflective film.

Crash Ratings and Security Levels

For sites facing deliberate vehicle attacks, crash-rated security bollards are tested against real vehicles. PROCOLUM bollards have passed real-vehicle crash tests by the Ministry of Public Security, meeting GA/T1343-2016 Grade A and B standards — the Chinese national standard for anti-ram bollards, equivalent to ASTM F2656 and IWA 14-1 (K12) international ratings. Grade A stops standard passenger vehicles; Grade B stops mid-size buses. When specifying crash-rated bollards, confirm the vehicle weight and speed your site must stop, then select the certified grade.

Where Security Bollards Are Used

Security bollards protect building entrances, storefronts, pedestrian streets, gas stations, embassy perimeters, government compounds, military facilities, airports, railway stations, and event venues. Beyond anti-ram defense, they are used for traffic calming, lane separation, and preventing parking on sidewalks. PROCOLUM has deployed over 6,000 bollards across all 34 provincial regions of China, with factory-direct pricing, custom colors, and 24/7 after-sales support.
