Why Regular Maintenance Matters
Hydraulic bollards are precision mechanical systems operating in harsh outdoor environments. Without regular maintenance, dirt, moisture, and wear gradually degrade performance until failure occurs — often at the worst possible moment. A structured maintenance program extends equipment life to 10+ years and ensures reliable operation when it matters most.
Monthly Inspection Checklist
- Visual inspection: Check column surface for scratches, dents, or corrosion spots. Inspect LED warning lights — all LEDs should illuminate evenly.
- Clean debris: Remove leaves, dirt, and debris from around the bollard base and drainage grates. Blocked drainage is the leading cause of water damage.
- Test operation: Run 3 complete lift/lower cycles. Listen for unusual noise — grinding, squealing, or irregular hydraulic sounds indicate potential issues.
- Check reflective film: 3M reflective strips should be intact, clean, and clearly visible at 50 meters. Replace if damaged or peeling.
- Control test: Test all control methods — remote, manual button, APP — to verify consistent response within 1 second.
Quarterly Maintenance
- Hydraulic oil check: Inspect oil level and condition. Dark or milky oil indicates contamination and requires replacement. Use manufacturer-specified hydraulic oil only.
- Seal inspection: Check all visible seals and gaskets for cracks or leakage. IP68-rated seals should be replaced every 3-5 years depending on climate.
- Electrical check: Inspect wiring connections for corrosion or looseness. Test grounding resistance (<4Ω required). Verify backup battery voltage and charge capacity.
- Bolt torque check: Verify all anchor bolts and flange bolts are at specified torque. Vibration from vehicle traffic can loosen fasteners over time.
Annual Comprehensive Service
- Full hydraulic system service: Drain and replace hydraulic oil, clean or replace filters, pressure-test the system for internal leaks.
- Motor and pump inspection: Measure motor current draw under load, compare to factory specifications. Abnormal current indicates bearing wear or pump degradation.
- Structural integrity: Inspect foundation for cracks or settlement. Check column verticality — deviation should not exceed 2mm per meter of height.
- Control system update: Update control board firmware if available. Test all emergency functions including manual override and battery backup operation.
- Professional service: We recommend an annual on-site service visit by a COLEI-certified technician for comprehensive inspection and calibration.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Slow lifting: Usually indicates low hydraulic oil or a clogged filter. Check oil level first, then inspect the filter element.
Column won't lower: Check power supply and control signal. Try manual emergency release. If hydraulic, check solenoid valve function.
Unusual noise: Air in hydraulic lines (bleed the system), worn pump bearings, or debris in the column guide rails.
LED lights flickering: Check power connections and LED driver. Water ingress in the light strip connector is the most common cause.
