Both bollards and road blockers serve vehicle access control, but they differ significantly in security level, physical footprint, cost, and installation complexity. Choosing the wrong solution can mean either overspending on unnecessary capability or leaving a critical vulnerability.
Security Level
Bollards: Available from low-security fixed posts to K12-rated hydraulic bollards capable of stopping a 7.5-ton truck. The key advantage: bollards can be spaced to allow pedestrian and motorcycle passage while blocking vehicles. Typical anti-ram bollards achieve K4 to K8 ratings.
Road Blockers: Designed for maximum stopping power at controlled entry points. Road blockers typically achieve K12 ratings (50 mph/7,500 kg) and provide a continuous physical barrier across the entire roadway width. They are the gold standard for high-security checkpoints where there is zero tolerance for unauthorized vehicle entry.
Installation Requirements
Bollards: Each bollard requires a cylindrical foundation approximately 800-1200mm deep. Multiple bollards share a common trench for power and control wiring. Total civil works are moderate — typically 3-5 days for a 3-bollard array.
Road Blockers: Require a massive reinforced concrete foundation across the full road width, typically 1500-2000mm deep with significant rebar reinforcement. Installation often requires road closure for 2-4 weeks and heavy excavation equipment.
Cost Comparison
Hydraulic bollards range from $2,000-$8,000 per unit. A typical 3-bollard installation with civil works totals $15,000-$35,000. Road blockers range from $20,000-$60,000 per unit, with total installed costs of $50,000-$150,000 — 3-5× more than bollard solutions.
Best-Use Scenarios
Choose Bollards When: Moderate to high security needed, pedestrian access must be maintained, budget is primary consideration, installation timeline is tight, or flexible traffic management is required.
Choose Road Blockers When: Maximum security is non-negotiable (military bases, nuclear facilities, embassies), the entry point has high traffic with dedicated guards, sufficient budget and installation time are available.
